The latest reports are claiming that Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi will offer their resignation on Monday from Congress Working Committee.
According to some TV channels, Rahul and Sonia will address Monday’s CWC meet and as a part of taking responsibility for party’s worst performance in the Lok Sabha elections, they will offer their resignation.
Congress has managed to get only 44 seats, while Narendra Modi led BJP got 282 seats on its own.
NDTV says that the move was likely to be “largely symbolic as party leaders are unlikely to accept it”.
“Sources say emotional speeches will set the tone for deep introspection on the Congress’ spectacular rout. India’s oldest party was reduced to double digits in Parliament and failed to win a single seat in 10 states, as a long and grueling campaign by Rahul Gandhi failed to stop the tide of public anger”, the NDTV website said.
Following the polls result, both Sonia and Rahul met the press for a brief period and took ‘full responsibility’ for party’s poor performance.
“The new government has been given a mandate by the people. As Congress Vice President I hold myself responsible. The Congress party has done badly,” Rahul Gandhi said.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi said, “We did not get the support that we anticipated. We hope that the next government will maintain the unity of India. I congratulate the next government. I take full responsibility for the loss of Congress.”
