The Supreme Court on Thursday accepted a Public Interest Litigation, challenging the appointment of the new Comptroller and Auditor General of India, Shashi Kant Sharma.
Government recently appointed Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma as CAG. Opposition parties raised question on his appointment as Mr. Sharma has been in subject to scrutiny for his (mis)handling in several defence deals including Augusta chopper deal where his role is under question.
Former CAG Vinod Rai retired on 22nd May. He took the office of office of Comptroller and Auditor General in new height. In his tenure government he put the government in the dock several times by his financial inspection. He has shown how political class in power misusing money in 2G, CWG or the mining scam.
BJP has said his appointment as CAG ‘a case of conflict of interest’.
Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said, “He (Shashi Kant Sharma) will audit it himself. Is it appropriate?”
The Supreme Court will hear the case in July.
