MNS Chief Raj Thackeray may pull out of contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls following a meeting with former BJP president Nitin Gakari on Monday.
According to some media reports Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena may not contest the general elections which to be taken place in less than three months after talks with the BJP.
BJP leader Nitin Gadkari had met Raj Thackeray over lunch at a Mumbai hotel on Monday and tried to convince him not to take part in the upcoming elections and to concentrate on the assembly polls which will take place later this year.
“I told Raj Thackeray if he contests, then the anti-Congress votes will be split. We don’t want the Congress to benefit by the MNS. I appealed to him to either stay away from the Lok Sabha polls or help our candidates. If MNS contests, then they should do so in as few seats as possible,” Gadkari told reporters.
Raj Thackeray got a little over 4% votes in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from 48 seats and BJP desperately wants to avoid opposition vote cut at any cost. With the declining support of ruling cong-NCP alliance in Maharasthra, BJP wants to take advantage by pushing consolidated opposition votes in the state which offers second largest number of Lok Sabha seats.
