Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday commissioned India’s biggest indigenously-built naval destroyer INS Kolkata into the Indian Navy and dedicated INS Kolkata to the nation.
“INS Kolkata is entirely built in India and it is a symbol of our self-reliance. It is a prime example of India’s technical abilities and will send a message around the globe,” Mr Modi said in Mumbai.
INS Kolkata has been built at the Mazgaon Docks in Mumbai.
“Yesterday we celebrated Independence Day but it is our Armed Forces that are protecting the free India,” Modi said adding, “The entire nation may not be in uniform but we stand firmly behind you and are proud of you.”
“In the Budget we have taken several steps for defence offsets. We dream to make India strong to export defence equipment to the world. My government has taken important steps in improving indigenous defence technology,” Modi further said.
Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said, “It is a historic day for India and its people. I hope this ship will enhance our Navy’s capacity.”
