After successful ‘free bicycles project for schoolgirls’, now Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has promised free tablet and laptops for girls and women in Bihar ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha polls.
Bihar Government is set to spend Rs 8,000-crore for Nitish Kumar’s ambitious project to bring digital literacy to women in urban and rural Bihar.
Free gadgets, especially free laptops seem to be a top electoral carrot as other Chief Ministers are also using this tool. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav distributed free laptops or tablets too prior to UP assembly election. Raman Singh government in Chhattisgarh too promises free computers after the polls. Jharkhand Government also promises free laptops for students recently.
Indian Express recently run a story on this and claimed that Nitish’s project is unique as the Bihar Chief Minister targeting digital literacy to women in rural Bihar too. The story said, “It will be prepped with informative applications like how to give first aid to a child suffering a sudden bout of diarrhoea, helping the user to contact the nearest primary health centre and even call up a doctor there. It will also have education-related information to enable the user to help her children with homework. The government also hopes to monitor the midday meal scheme through these tablets.”
