Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed the joint session of Bhutan Parliament in Thimphu.
Praising Bhutan’s smooth transition into democracy, Narendra Modi said, “The smooth transition from monarchy to democracy shows the political maturity in Bhutan. It is an example of people’s awareness. I commend the way Bhutan has transitioned into a democracy in seven years.”
The Prime Minister said that a strong India means a strong neighbourhood.
“If India progresses, it will directly impact the development of neighbours,” he said.
Calling it ‘B for B – Bharat for Bhutan’, the PM has strongly pitched for bilateral ties between India and Bhutan.
“India-Bhutan relations are bound by rich cultural traditions,” Modi said adding, “Close India and Bhutan relations transcend changes in governments.”
“The Himalayas bring us together. We must be very proud of the Himalayas. It is our strength. I thought – all Himalayan states and Bhutan- can we not do a special sports meet on a regular basis. Sportsman spirit brings happiness,” he said.
Admiring Bhutan’s royal family, Modi said, “It’s commendable the way Bhutan royal family has protected the rights of its ordinary citizens.”
Narendra Modi has also lay down the foundation stone of the 600 MV Kholongchu hydropower project and listed out projects like hydel power project, sports meet, space technology where India will help Bhutan to improve their economy.
“If you walk a few steps ahead we too feel like walking those steps ahead and supporting you,” Modi said.
“India’s investment in Bhutan hydel project will help the economies of both the countries. Hydro-power cooperation between India and Bhutan is part of our collective effort to tackle global warming,” he added.
Modi’s first foreign visit comes to an end today. He also thanked the people of Bhutan for a warm welcome.
“I congratulate and thank the people of Bhutan. I received such a warm welcome yesterday,” Modi said.
Meanwhile the reports are coming that Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to watch the FIFA World Cup 2014 finals. It is, however, not clear whether he will go to Brazil or not.
