As widely expected, Narendra Modi has come back to power for the consecutive third time in Gujarat as Bharatiya Janata Party emerging clear winner in the Gujarat assembly elections.
Modi, who has defeated IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s wife Shweta Bhatt by a margin of 86,373 votes, expressed his delight through a tweet: “No need of looking behind …FORWARD…We want infinite energy, infinite courage, infinite patience…”
BJP has won 116 seats, just 5 short of two-thirds majority in the Assembly. BJP has lost one seat from the 2007 elections. Congress which was hopeful of gaining more seats because of possible anti-incumbency factor has ended up with 60 seats. Since 1998 Congress has been kept out of power in Gujarat.
After winning this decisive, prestigious election now Narendra Modi camp has sparked a fresh row over his candidature for the PM’s post in the 2014 General Elections. Now it will be interesting to see how BJP’s internal party dynamics shape the contest for leadership and prime ministership.
