In a unprecedented move, Prime Minister designate Narendra Modi has invited heads of the all South Asian governments including Pakistan to attend his swearing-in ceremony on Monday.
The move not only surprised diplomats, but also astonished the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh who had no clue about this.
Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh, the Ministry of External Affairs has informed that formal invitations despatched on Wednesday afternoon to the Presidents or Prime Ministers of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomes Modi’s reaching out to SAARC leaders and especially inviting Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to his swearing in ceremony.
“Excellent move by @narendramodi to invite SAARC leaders, especially Pak PM for his swearing in. Hope this is beginning of sustained talks,” Omar wrote on twitter.
PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti also praised Modi’s move.
“It’s a good omen to invite Pakistan Prime Minister for Modi’s swearing-in. It’s a pleasant surprise and quite unbelievable,” said Mehbooba.
