Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced he will step down after 2014 Lok Sabha elections on Friday at a press conference in New Delhi.
“In a few months time, after the general election, I will hand the baton over to a new Prime Minister,” Manmohan Singh told media.
He said that he believes “we are set for better times” and “India’s growth momentum will revive.”
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh admitted that Congress did not do well in the recently concluded assembly elections.
“We did not do well in the assembly elections. We will learn our lessons,” the PM said.
Crediting his performance in the last 10 years he said his government has done well for the country and “Growth rate in past 9 years is the highest.”
Batting for Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Ministerial candidate, Dr. Manmohan Singh said, “Rahul Gandhi has outstanding credentials to be nominated as Congress’s PM candidate.”
“Our government would have strengthened if Rahul would have been part of the UPA-II candidate. But, Rahul felt he had more responsibilities towards the party and I respect that,” Singh added.
He also attacked BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Modi by saying, “Without going into the credentials of anyone, I think it will be disastrous for the country to have Narendra Modi as the PM. Strong leader does not mean you preside over the mass massacre of people in Ahmedabad.”
At the end Manmohan Singh said he hopes history will be kinder to him than the contemporary media.
