After Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha today passed the historic Lokpal Bill, ending 46 years of waiting.
With the passing of Lokpal Bill, India has taken a giant step towards curbing the corruption in the country. Lok Sabha passed the bill with the 15 amendments proposed by the Select committee.
“It is our responsibility to complete our unfinished fight against corruption,” Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi said in the parliament.
Rahul Gandhi also said that this Lokpal Bill alone is not enough to curb corruption. Parliament needs to pass the six more anti-corruption bills soon.
“It is the responsibility of the 15th Lok Sabha to approve all six anti-corruption bills. Lokpal Bill alone is not enough to fight corruption. I request for extension of the session. Need to pass the Judicial Accountability Bill, the Whistle Blowers Bill,” said Rahul.
The Leader of Opposition Ms Sushma Swaraj gave credit to Anna Hazare and people of India for pressurizing parliament for passing the Bill.
“People are lining up to take credit, but there is an old man who keeps fasting for the bill and appeals to our collective conscience. And then the people of this country deserve credit,” Sushma Swaraj said.
SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav criticised the Lokpal Bill and staged walkout.
“In a democracy the people’s representatives are supreme. This Bill will allow a policeman to come and harass us. Have MPs and MLAs not been convicted under existing laws?” Mulayam Yadav said.
Anti-corruption cruisador Anna Hazare who lead the Lokpal movement, has ended his 9-day fast after both the house passed the bill.
It is indeed a historic day for India.
