After advocating pardon plea for Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt from 5-year jail sentence given by Supreme Court in 1993 Bombay blasts case, now Press Council of India Chairman Justice (Retd.) Markandey Katju says he supports Zaibunisa Kazi’s appeal to Governor for pardoning her in the same case.
Supreme Court has awarded five year imprisonment for Zaibunnisa Anwar Kazi.
The 70-year-old Zaibunisa Kazi said she is innocent and has written to governor of Maharashtra to pardon her.
‘I would like to appeal to the Governor to look at my case too. I am innocent. I haven’t done anything,’ said Zaibunisa to a news channel.
Supporting Zaibunisa’s plea, Justice Katju said, “I don’t know Sanjay Dutt personally. I sought pardon for him purely on humanitarian grounds. I will send letter to the Governor and the President, both for Zaibunisa and Sanjay, tomorrow.”
“I wish I was a celebrity or my mother was a celebrity or a sister of an MP. Even my mother would have got the kind of support Sanjay Dutt is getting. If it is on humanitarian grounds then why only Sanjay Dutt, why not Zaibunisa,” Zaibunisa’s daughter told news channels.
We can’t help wondering why Justice katju does not resign as chairman of Press Council of India and take up advocacy instead. We wonder why media make it a point to publicise Mr. Katju’s comments which has nothing to do with the role of Justice Katju as a chairman of PCI.
