Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has asked GAIL to stop its ongoing Kochi-Bengaluru gas pipeline project and return the land immediately to the farmers as the project is affecting agricultural land.
Jayalalithaa also said that GAIL can resume their work alongside of the national highways.
The government’s decision has come amidst protests from the farmers in the state.
“GAIL should withdraw the current scheme and should take steps to lay pipelines along the side of the national highways,” Jayalalithaa announced in the assembly.
“Nobody will accept that there is any justification that industrial growth should be attained at the cost of farmers’ livelihood…my government is determined that projects are for the people, and not the other way around,” Jayalalitha said.
Jayalalitha has also asked GAIL to pay damages to the affected farmers.
