Jairam Ramesh pitches for Uttar Pradesh division

After creating Telengana by dividing the state of Andhra Prasdsh, now Union Minister Jairam Ramesh has pitched for Uttar Pradesh’s division into four states.

While speaking to CNN-IBN’s Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai, Jairam Ramesh said that the next government, precisely UPA 3, would consider dividing Uttar Pradesh into smaller states.

Ramesh said that a large state like Uttar Pradesh is difficult to manage and govern so the state reorganisation committee could look into dividing the UP into 3 or 4 smaller state.

“I am all for the reorganisation of Uttar Pradesh. It could be 2 or 3 or 4, that needs to be looked at, but the state as currently configured is simply not possible to be governed effectively and sensitively. I think we need to look at the state. This is where the heartland of India lies,” Ramesh said.

When asked whether he supports Vidarbha demand, Ramesh said, “I would not support Gorkhaland. There are strategic issues in Gorkhaland. I will not support that. I would not support Bodoland, but Vidarbha has been a demand in the past. I am suprised in the case of Vidarbha, the NCP seems to be in favour of Vidarbha, the BJP is is favour of Vidarbha, it is only the Shiv Sena which needs to be brought on board. But on Uttar Pradesh, if we are interested in the future of the state and the future of India lies in the future of Uttar Pradesh. We need to do some hard thinking after the elections on re-configuring the current geography of the state.”

Praising Rahul Gandhi’s vision and his young team Ramesh said, “Rahul will make a new team of young leaders. Even I’ll be history.”

It is absolutely clear that Congress is trying to woo BSP ahead of upcoming Lok Sabha polls with this proposal. Mayawati has been demanding bifurcation of UP to make 4 smaller states. However, to reasoning – one cannot govern a bigger state so divide it – is not only unfortunate but an inefficient way of looking. In name of better governance if Congress plans to divide the states, the day will not far when they will say as they can’t manage a big country like India, so crate smaller countries.
