The BJP-led government is furious over the reports that US national security agency (NSA) snooped on BJP. The government is all set to lodge a protest with the US administration and warn them.

The leaked documents produced by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden showed the revealed the snooping, embarrassing the Obama administration once again.

India is likely to summon the US envoy here in New Delhi and also Indian ambassador to US S Jaishankar may register a “strong protest” in Washington.

According to a Washington Post report, based on documents leaked by Snowden, NSA had snooped on some non-US political parties including Lebanon’s Amal, which has suspected links with Hezbollah, Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood and the Pakistan’s Peoples Party and Bharatiya Janata Party.

The sources close to BJP said that if the reports are correct then the party will demand strong action against US as BJP feels snooping on individual privacy would not acceptable.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said government would look after the matter seriously.

“This is serious. We will definitely see what has actually happened. If some organisation was targeted… it is serious. We will definitely take up the issue after we cross-check the facts,” Javadekar told reporters.

Party general secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the matter was of “deep concern” and needed to be validated.

“Edward Snowden’s revelation of spying of BJP needs to be authenticated. If true, MEA must respond appropriately. (It is) a matter of deep concern,” Rudy said.

Another BJP leader Shrikant Sharma, said, “It is a serious matter. If there is any truth in media reports then the government will look into it.”
