Updates regarding India’s entry into planet Mars started yesterday, but today morning was very special one. Highly excited, I turned on TV today morning and saw scientists, Prime Minister and other renowned persons taking note of each and every second of the Mission’s progress. Indeed, our own ISRO team has established itself on global level by becoming the 4th agency after the Soviet Space program, NASA, and the European Space Agency, to conquer Mars and the only agency to be successful in its first attempt. Each and every second heart beats ran faster and confidence was built on every success. Hard work with limited resources, confidence to take-up challenges, firm determination to accomplish have all been part and parcel of this mission.
About the Mission
The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), informally known as “Mangalyaan” is a Mars orbiter launched into Earth orbit. The mission acts as a “technology demonstrator” project that aims to develop the technologies required for design, planning, management, and operations of an interplanetary mission.
The First Launch was done using a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket C25 at 14:38 IST on 5 November 2013. The spacecraft is currently being monitored from the Spacecraft Control Centre at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bangalore with support from Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennae at Byalalu.
Within a short span of just 2 years the complete mission has been executed with a mere total project cost of Rs. 4.54 billion (US $74 million).
The mission’s primary objective is to showcase India’s rocket launch systems, spacecraft-building and operations capabilities. The secondary objective is to explore Mars’ surface features, morphology, mineralogy and Martian atmosphere using indigenous scientific instruments.
This successful insertion of Mars Orbiter Mission into Martian orbit has given India’s Space and Technology programs an impetus for future success. Yes, today’s historic day will be always remembered and cherished by every Indian throughout life and will be an inspiration to move forward and the hunger of exploration and the thrill of discovery will be cultivated in generations to come.
Official Twitter handle of ISRO’s Mars Orbiter @MarsOrbiter has also been created and it has started tweeting now with NASA’s mission Curiosity Rover @MarsCuriosity.
Here is small discussion between Mars Curiosity and Mars Orbiter on twitter.
Howdy @MarsCuriosity ? Keep in touch. I’ll be around.
