To keep all political parties out of RTI ambit, the UPA government today tabled RTI Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. The discussion on the bill will be held this week.
Earlier Central Information Commission proposed to keep all political parties under RTI act which gives public a power to seek information from parties on almost every issues including funding.
However in rare showcase of unity, parties from all spectrums opposed this proposal and refused to come under the ambit of RTI. The reason has been given that the political parties are an association of individuals and not public authorities, therefore there is no need for the parties to come under RTI ambit.
The Cabinet had approved RTI amendment act on August 1. Once the amendments pass in Parliament, political parties are free from RTI queries.
