Following the uproar and criticism, the Goa government has finally cancelled MLAs’ controversial ‘study tour’ on tax-payers money to Brazil for FIFA World Cup 2014.
“We were in the hot seat, so we had to take a decision… we decided we would not spend exchequer’s money… we respect people’s sentiments,” Goa Fisheries Ministers Avertano Furtado confirmed the news on TV channel.
Following the expose, that Goa government had rewarded Rs. 89-lakh to six MLAs on a “study tour” to Brazil to watch World Cup matches, the protest broke out across India. Opposition parties strongly criticised the Manohar Parrikkar-led BJP government for misusing tax-payers’ money.
Defending the sanction, chief minister Parrikar Parrikkar had said, “The decision has been taken in the interest of Goa, football is our state sport. Some MLAs on the team are ex-footballers.”
However, there were not a single sportsperson in that delegation.
Earlier Goa Congress spokesman Durgadas Kamat attacked BJP after theMLAs claimed that they would pay from their pocket.
