The Modi government on late Wednesday evening sacked foreign secretary Sujatha Singh “with immediate effect”, eight months before she formally retired.
India’s ambassador to the US, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, has been appointed as the new foreign secretary of India.
It was speculated from the beginning that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not tolerate any inefficient person on top job. He had not been happy with Sing’s performance. It was reported that former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was also not too happy with her and Jaishankar was his personal choice. However, Sonia Gandhi pushed for Sujatha Singh’s appointment due to her connection with Congress party. Singh’s father TV Rajeshwar was former IB chief and Congress party member.

The government was waiting for Obama visit to over, before formally “curtailment of tenure of foreign secretary Sujatha Singh”.
The successor to Jaishankar in US has not been announced yet. 1977 batch of the Indian Foreign Service, Jaishankar was also served as ambassador to China, Singapore and the Czech Republic before taking over responsibility in US.
