Disputing Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s praise for Article 370 for Jammu and Kashmir, Cabinet Minister Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar on Tuesday came up supporting Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s call for rethinking of Article 370 as it has been discriminating against women.
On Monday Nitish Kumar launched fierce attack on his enemy Narendra Modi for raising Article 370 issue by it was an attempt to divide the country.
“Article 370 is given to Jammu and Kashmir in view of the special condition of the border state and the people of the country have accepted this. I am a supporter of Article 370 for state of Jammu and Kashmir…there is neither a need for debate on the subject nor any need for changing it. Raking up the issue is nothing but an attempt to again draw a line of division in the country,” Kumar told reporters on Monday.
Sunanda Pushkar, on the other hand had said on Tuesday, that India need to relook on the importance of Article 370.
“There is definitely a need to rethink beacuse there is a lot of discrimination against women. My friends from Kashmir called me and said that we girls do not get government jobs once we marry someone who is a non-Kashmiri. The girls who get married into Kashmiri families, who are not Kashmiri girls, they get government jobs and their children have all of the rights,” Sunanda Pushkar said.
Former Chief Minister and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah criticised Modi and said if he comes into power then also he can’t repeal article 370 from Jammu & Kashmir.
“Even if Modi becomes PM for ten terms, he will not be able to do away with Article 370. You talk of debate, BJP does not indulge in any debate,” Farooq told reporters on Monday.
On Sunday Narendra Modi has suggested that India should debate on the benefits of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and after seeing the political steer in the country he twitted, “Glad that after my call for a debate on Article 370, it is being widely debated among people & across TV, social media.”
“However, we need rational & focused debate not only on 370 but other issues relating to J&K, including suffering of sections of J&K society,” he added.
