Veteran CPI leader Govind Pansare (82) and his wife were shot by 2 unidentified men at around 9 am on Monday outside their Ideal Housing Society at Sabarmala. He was leading a pivotal campaign against toll taxes and came under attack while he and his wife were returning home from their morning walk.
Shashikant Jog, an eyewitness said, “I heard fire shots in a small lane in front of my home and thought it might be firecrackers. However, in a moment I realised its odd timing for firecrackers and peeked (in)to the lane and saw two people lying on the road. I waas cleaning my scooter at that time. I rushed to them. Govindrao, whom we called Anna, was conscious and his wife was lying on the road. I called other people and took them to the hospital first.”
Both were rushed to the Aster Aadhar Hospital immediately after this attack where doctors confirmed that they were out of danger and were recuperating.
Omprakash Sharma, Superintendent of Police, Kolhapur said that Pansare was shot by bullets that hit him on the nape of his neck and one that brushed his hand. His wife, Mrs Uma Pansare was shot by a bullet, but is safe now.
Ram Shinde, Minister of States for Home said that road blocks have been ordered all the state to detain the sinners.
Devendra Fadanvis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra tweeted,”Deeply shocked on hearing about the heinous attack on Govindji Pansare & his wife. I strongly condemn it. Spoke to Kolhapur SP.
“Directed SP to speed up the investigation and arrest the assailants. 10 teams would be formed. DG to supervise the investigation. Praying for Govindji & his wife’s speedy recovery”, he further tweeted.
The gunmen were on a bike and managed to run away after firing openly at them.
Anant Geete, Shiv Sena leader said, “Its a law and order situation. I am sure that the state government will take appropriate action.”
