After ensuring Pranab Mukherjee’s win in the upcoming presidential election, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi now wants to give Hamid Ansari a second term for the post of Vice-President. Congress has started exercise and started calling coalition parties for support of Ansari’s candidature.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is also very keen to have Ansari for the post. Congress feels that it will give a good signal to Muslims. Former Prime Minister and JD-S leader HD Deve Gowda has extended his support for Ansari’s.
BJP is mum on the same after getting a bitter lesson in the presidential poll candidature. NDA divided on the issue, while BJP and Akali Dal supported PA Sangma, the JD-U and Shiv Sena openly backed former finance minister and UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee.
Now it is interesting to see whether BJP led NDA put forward with any name for the VP candidates. However if numbers are to be believed then it looks like Hamid Ansari will remain as the Vice-President of India for the second term. Whether it is unopposed or not, that is to see.
The vice-presidential election is slated to be held on August 7.
