The BJP government in the state of Maharashtra is apparently focusing on the district of Nanded in an attempt to win over one of the last bastions of Congress. Also the fiefdom of former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, the Nanded belt is the only region of Marathwada where BJP has failed to make its impact despite the campaigning made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.
Accordingly, a week ago, an order had been promulgated by the revenue department for the creation of a separate revenue division for Nanded which, as of now, falls under the Aurangabad division. The new revenue division would comprise of Nanded, Parbhani, Hingoli and Latur districts.
Earlier in 2009, under the Chavan governance, a resolution had been proposed for the creation of the same which only faced the strong disapproval of the ex- Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, stating to make his ‘own town’ Latur as the new headquarters.
