CPI senior leader and activist Comrade Govind Pansare (82) passed away on Friday night, at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Pansare and his wife, Uma were returning from their morning walk from Shivaji University in Kolhapur when two unidentified assailants had shot them five days ago.
From Kolhapur’s Asther Hospital he was shifted to Mumbai on Friday, in an air ambulance.
Pansare was in the forefront of the anti-road toll agitation. He was hit by a bullet in the nape of his neck, armpit and right leg. His wife was hit by one bullet but was declared out of danger when they both were taken to the hospital.
On Friday, an air ambulance was arranged which consisted 2 doctors from Nanavati Hospital and some necessary medication. He was then brought to Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai, where he passed away at 10:45 pm on Friday as his condition had started deteriorating around 9 pm.
Medical director of Breach Candy Hospital, Dr Geeta Koppikar said that Pansare passed away after his condition worsened around 9pm. As soon as the news of Mr Pansare’s death was made public the atmosphere in his hometown Kolhapur turned emotional.
Police are preparing sketches of the suspects by the information provided by his wife Uma. The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Mumbai police are assisting Kolhapur police for the probe. Maharashtra politicians have expressed their grief about this unfortunate situation.
