Mumbai witnessed it’s first heavy rainfall of the year on Wednesday night, that resulted into falling of trees in many parts of the city. The heavy downpour saw around 20 trees being uprooted in areas like Colaba, Byculla, Mahim, Ghatkopar, Kandivali, and Borivali.
An official spokesperson of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the expected rainfall might range from “heavy to very heavy”, for the next 48 hours. “Rainfall is expected for the next two days, intermediate sometime heavy” said V K Rajeev Director of IMD. According to IMD report, rain shower, on Thursday, was reported to be 41.7 mm in Colaba, while that in Santacruz was 17.6mm. Cases of water logging have been reported in Yari Road, Versova, Andheri West, Santacruz, Bandra, Mahim areas but it was receded shortly.
However, Friday morning brought fresh changes in scenario as the dawn saw heavy downpour across various parts of the city, so heavy that the local trains or rather, the lifeline of the city has been affected. Trains plying on all the three lines of Central, Western and Harbour have been cancelled unless and until normalcy resumes back. Not just the railways, disruptions have also occurred in other modes of transport like scarcity of auto rickshaws that comes just two days after their strike, scarcity of buses which have resulted in people being stranded at various places across.
Though nothing can be said of yet, people have been advised to stay indoors and avoid outdoor work as much as possible.
