Following the Uttar Pradesh Governor BL Joshi’s footsteps, the Chhattisgarh Governor Shekhar Dutt has also resigned from his post.
“The Governor submitted his resignation papers to President Pranab Mukherjee last night in New Delhi,” Dutt’s office confirmed the news on Thursday.
In a full-fledged political war between NDA and UPA, the newly elected Narendra Modi government wants to remove six governors who were appointed by the previous Congress-led UPA.
Home Secretary Anil Goswami has called six governors including West Bengal governor M K Narayanan, Kerala governor Sheila Dikshit, Rajasthan governor Margaret Alva, Gujarat governor Kamla Beniwal, Maharashtra governor K Sankaranarayanan and Tripura governor Devendra Konwar and asked them to put in their papers. However, some of the governors are adamant to follow the government order and asked to give them logical explanation why they are to be removed.
Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan on Wednesday admitted that he had received calls, but ruled out the possibility of resignation unless he was asked by “an appropriate decision-making authority.”
“I didn’t reply. The Governor’s post is a constitutional post. He is a representative of the President; he is appointed by the President. No responsible person has asked me anything in writing to relieve the post… If an appropriate decision making authority asks me (to quit), I will definitely think over it,” he said in a statement.
Kerala Governor Sheila Dikshit also refused to resign and asked the government to show exact reason for the same.
Sheila Dikshit son, Sandeep Dikshit, asked, “Who is the Home Secretary to call a Governor?”
The baffled Congress cried foul and said that BJP is violating a 2010 Supreme Court judgement in which the apex court said, “change in government at the Centre is not a ground for removal of Governors holding office to make way for others favoured by the new government.”
