The CBI has conducted a raid at the DMK leader M.K. Stalin’s house in Chennai on Thursday morning in connection with a tax evasion case on imported luxury cars.
A CBI team has conducted searches at 20 places in Tamil Nadu in order to probe Rs. 20 crore tax evasion case filed by DRI.
“We have registered a case against Muruganandham, Senior Intelligence Officer in the DRI, a car importer and others. Prima facie it appears that the DRI officials did not take action either to recover the tax or confiscate the cars,” CBI personnel told The Hindu.
Since there was no FIR registered against Stalin or his son Udhayanidhi, why the CBI went ahead and searched the house is unexplainable.
“We only went to his house in search of the car,” CBI officer said.
“The car used by Mr Udhayanidhi Stalin was found in a service station. So far 12 imported cars have been identified and located. They will be handed over to the DRI for further investigation. In case evasion of tax is established, the Customs Department will register a case. Many of these cars were not purchased in the names of the users…”he told The Hindu.
The ‘timing’ has itself raised severe questions on government’s intention and its alleged (mis)using of the CBI on its political rivals. It is noted that DMK has pull out from the UPA government only two days back over Sri Lankan Tamils issue.
