The union cabinet will discuss and decide the fate of ordinance on convicted legislators on October 2. Amid the controversy over Rahul Gandhi’s ‘nonsense’ comments on the ordinance, government is forced to re-look the ordinance. According to the sources, the government will withdraw the ordinance after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi publicly challenged Prime Minister led ordinance and asked it to be ‘torn up and thrown away’. Opposition parties have earlier objected to the ordinance and BJP approached President to not sign this.
The Union Cabinet cleared the ordinance to allow convicted and jailed leaders to run the offices, by overruling Supreme Court order in which the Apex Court said convicted MPs, MLAs and MLCs who get punishment of two years or more can not contest the elections and would face immediate disqualification from Parliament and Assemblies.
“All parties do this because of political considerations and we must stop making compromises,” Rahul had said.
