The principal opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party has asked the government to stop the Sethusamudram project as it involves Hindu sentiments.
BJP has warned government that they will have to pay the price if they try to tamper with the Ram Setu.
“We would like to warn the government on the Ram Setu issue. It is ignoring the recommendations of the RK Pachauri Committee report and going ahead with the project. This is an issue related to Hindu sentiments and beliefs…BJP and the nation will not tolerate any tampering with the Ram Setu.” BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Saturday.
Recently government has rejected the Pachauri Committee report which says government should not go ahead with the project as it is not feasible on account of economy and ecologically.
BJP understandably from the beginning is opposing the project.
Ram Setu has immense importance in the hindu mythology. It is a mythical bridge on which Lord Ram and his army crossed the sea to kill Ravan.
“Without the Ram Setu you cannot think of the Ramayana. Why is cutting through it the only solution?” asked Mr. Prasad.
Government, however, is keen to build a shipping channel between India and Sri Lanka through the setu.
