BJP demands former Supreme Court judge AK Ganguly’s resignation as the Chairperson of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission over the accusation for sexual harassment.
After three-member Supreme Court panel said that the prima facia evidence showed that the allegations against AK Ganguly appeared to be true, the demand for his resignation increased in the country.
BJP today took up the issue at the Lok Sabha and said either he resigns immediately or he should be sacked.
“It is unfortunate that even after the strong laws framed after the Nirbhaya case, incidents like this happen. The higher a person’s post, the bigger is his crime and the punishment should be tougher. His status should not be a shield against punishment,” Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj said.
“This should be an example to all, that no matter how senior, no one will be spared for even the smallest crime, otherwise incidents of sexual harassment will not stop,” Swaraj said.
“On ethical ground he should have resigned by now. But he is stubbornly sticking to his post. He should immediately resign or else he should be removed from his post,” she said.
Trinamool Congress, Congress and and several other parties also asked Justice Ganguly to step down from the post. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to President Pranab Mukherjee for sacking him from the post.
Justice Ganguly has, however, denied the charges and refused to quit.
In her blogpost a young intern has allegedly accused justice AK Ganguly of sexually harassing her at a hotel in Delhi.
Meanwhile Additional Solicitor General Indira Jaisingh on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and seeks action against the Justice AK Ganguly.
