The Supreme Court has rejected the plea for CBI probe into the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots on Wednesday. The court said that there was no need for a CBI or SIT probe at this moment.
Affirming the PIL which accused Uttar Pradesh government of negligence, the Supreme Court said, “The state has to take more effective measures.”
Following Supreme Court’s blow to UP government, the BJP has demanded Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s resignation.
“The main responsibility was with the Uttar Pradesh government. The decision (of the Supreme Court) is not surprising. This is a fact which has come out in true colours in front of the people. The Uttar Pradesh CM should take moral responsibilty and resign,” BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said.
In its observation, the bench headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam, said that the state had failed to prevent the riots as well as it had failed to protect the fundamental rights of the people.
The court also slammed intelligence agencies for not smelling the ground level tension before the riot took place.
The Supreme Court also ordered UP government to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation to women who were sexually assaulted and harassed during the riots. Reversing UP government’s circular that only Muslim victims will be compensated, the court said that the relief should be given to all genuine victims not based victim’s religious status.
The Samajwadi Party has said that it “will respect the emotions of the Supreme Court”.
