The BJP continues hitting out at the Election Commission for allowing Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi’s roadshow at the same venue in Varanasi where Narendra Modi’s rally had been cancelled.
Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley slammed EC for its ‘biased’ decision.
“The Election Commission should take note of this reality. Rahul’s roadshow is going through Beniabagh, where Mr Modi was not allowed to hold a rally. Security restrictions exist only for the BJP, not for the others? This proves we were not allowed to hold a rally only for political reasons,” Mr Jaitley said.
“This will be a major blot on elections in India. The Prime Ministerial candidate was not allowed to campaign in his own constituency,” he said.
Returning Officer Pranjal Yadav denied Modi’s single rally in Varanasi, citing security reasons, however, it is not clear, then why Arvind Kejriwal’s or Rahul Gandhi’s rally at the same area granted permission.
After facing enormous criticisms for blocking Narendra Modi’s single rally at Benia Bagh, the Election Commission has finally admitted that there were ‘lapses’ in handling crisis in Varanasi constituency and on Friday it had appointed Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar as a special observer for Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency.
