Congress Chief and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi said that government will soon bring a strong law to prevent crime against women in the country.
“The UPA government has taken several steps for the betterment of women and to make them self dependent. With a fund of around Rs 1000 crores, we are planning to set up a Women Bank, which will be run by women and help women in their business ventures,” said Sonia Gandhi on Saturday in Maldah.
“We are also constituting a Nirbhaya fund with Rs. 1000 crore. This fund will be used to protect the honour and dignity of our mothers and sisters,” she said.
Last week Union Cabinet has cleared a bill which proposed strict punishment for rape, acid attack, stalking and voyeurism.
The cabinet has also cleared the bill reducing the age of consent for sex to 16 years from 18 years.
