US President Barack Obama has called Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi on Friday and congratulated him for BJP’s historic victory in the Lok Sabha polls. Obama has also invited Modi to visit US and said he is looking forward to closely work with India.
Obama’s call has been seen as the most significant steps taken by the US in recent times to ease the relationship between US and Narendra Modi whom they have denied visa repeatedly following 2002 Gujarat riots.
Obama said that US is keen to have strong bilateral relationships between the two largest democracies in the world.
The White house statement said that both the leaders agreed to work towards strengthening strategic partnership, and expanding wide-range of cooperation.
Earlier, US Secretary of State John Kerry congratulated Narendra Modi on Twitter.
“Congrats to @narendramodi and BJP. Look forward to working w/you/growing shared prosperity/security w/world’s largest democracy,” Kerry said.
