The US-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka over human rights violations has been passed at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on Thursday. Although India voted for the resolution but it did not seek any amendments to the resolution as earlier promised.
25 countries have voted in favour of the resolution while 13 countries voted against it. Eight countries remain abstained from voting. Pakistan supported Sri Lanka and voted against the resolution.
“We urge Sri Lanka to take up investigation that is credible and acceptable to the international community. Political settlement should be acceptable to all including Tamils,” The Indian envoy to the UNHRC Dilip Sinha said.
“We reiterate our call for an independent and credible investigation into allegations of human rights violations and loss of civilian lives,” Mr. Sinha said.
“We note with concern the inadequate progress by Sri Lanka in fulfilling its commitment to this Council in 2009. Further, we call on Sri Lanka to move forward on its public commitments, including on the devolution of political authority through full implementation of the 13th Amendment and building upon it,” Sinha added.
The Sri Lankan envoy strongly rejected the resolution and said, “The resolution casts aspersion on Sri Lanka’s reconciliation process. Sri Lanka’s constructive engagement has been ignored.”
“A country specific resolution is not an example of constructive engagement,” Pakistan envoy said and voted against the US resolution.
Meanwhile DMK strongly criticised the government and said it had failed Tamilians for not taking a tough stand against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC.
