A day after the exit polls result reveals Narendra Modi is inching closer to become the next PM of India, the hunt for the next Chief Minister of Gujarat has already began. Senior BJP leader Anandiben Patel has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Mr. Modi as the CM in the state.
Anandiben, an important minister in the Gujarat cabinet, who handled portfolios like revenue, road and buildings urban development, and disaster management, is close to Narendra Modi and enjoys wider acceptance in the state party unit.
BJP leaders have already met and started discussing on the possible names. Other two names which are buzzing around include powerful state minister Nitin Patel and current state BJP president RC Faldu, but it is almost certain that Anandiben will succeed Narendra Modi to become the next Gujarat Chief Minister.
Hindustan Times quoted a source within BJP who confirmed the news.
“The CM (Modi) had discussed it with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and the BJP leadership. It is almost final that she will be the next CM and is likely to be sworn in before May 20,” the source said.
“She is a natural successor because she enjoys Modi’s trust. She is the most experienced and senior minister in the state cabinet,” HT quoted a top Gujarat bureaucrat.
BJP is likely to announce her name as soon as the Lok Sabha polls results are out on May 16.
