At least 8 people were killed as the cyclone Hudhud hit the coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha with over 200 km per hour intensity yesterday.
Although the met department has said that the cyclone has been weakening, but the storm will continue during the day.
The state governments had taken serious initiatives and precautions in wake of the cyclone. Around 4 lakh people have been evacuated from the coastal areas in the two states to avoid more causality.
Visakhapatnam was severely hit by the cyclone. Power and communication lines collapsed in many places. Roads and railway tracks have been damaged too as big trees were uprooted and dented in transportation system. The authorities are trying to normalize the Visakhapatnam airport by this afternoon.
Odisha too has experienced power cut since Sunday. The phone lines are also damaged. Met department has predicted heavy rains for 72 hours.
“We are all prepared. 67,752 people have been evacuated in Gajapati, Ganjam, Korapur and other districts to 604 safe shelters. We are monitoring the situation and are taking all possible steps,” said Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
The home minister Rajnath Singh has spoken to both the chief minister and assessed the damage.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to announce the cyclone a ‘national calamity’.
