A day after the reports of 46 stranded Indian nurses in Tikrit, yet another horrific news moved the country. At least 40 Indian workers have been kidnapped in Mosul in Iraq on Tuesday by suspected brutal militant group ISIS. The incident took place when they were being evacuated from the project site amidst the civil war between the Shia-dominated government in Baghdad and Sunni jihadis.
No militant group has, however, officially claimed the incident or put forward any demand.
Indian government has contacted the Iraqi authorities and asking speedy actions to rescue the kidnapped Indians. Former ambassador to Iraq Suresh Reddy is on his way to Mosul to monitor the situation and ensure the actions. National security advisor A K Doval is coordinating the rescue effort.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the foreign office to leave no stone unturned to solve the crisis and make sure the safe return of Indian workers to the country.
It would be a huge challenge for Indian government to bring back the hostages. The Islamist militant group ISIS has been known for its brutality and unimaginable torturers. Their brutality even shocked al-Qaida members. As there is no authority presence in Mosul and neighboring regions, it would be tough for Indian embassy to negotiate in releasing Indians from ISIS grab.
Meanwhile, Sunni militant group ISIS has vowed to dethrone the Shia dominated Nouri Al Maliki regime. ISIS rebels are believed to be near 60km from Baghdad. The US is considering air strike in cooperation with Iran to stop the uprising by the rebel militants.
