In a major blow to the Congress-led UPA government, the Supreme Court today quashed all 122 spectrum licenses granted by A. Raja after January 2008.
Justice GS Singhvi and Justice AK Ganguly bench today delivered one of the most important verdict in 2G spectrum allocation scam. The scam surfaced during UPA 2. Two ministers from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s cabinet including former telecom minister A. Raja had to resign and booked to jail. The fate of another minister P Chidambaram to be decided very soon.
The Supreme Court left it to the trial court to decide on investigation of the alleged role of home minister P Chidambaram into the 2G spectrum allocation scam. Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy’s petition seeking a CBI probe on Chidambaram.
As already the decision has been reserved in trail court, the bench said they will not influence the proceedings of trial court. However it has ordered Trail Court to complete the verdict in 2 weeks.
The fate of home minister P Chidambaram can be decided on the next hearing of Patiala Trail Court on 4th of February.
The Apex Court also ruled out the need for SIT to monitor the 2G scam probe, and asked the CBI to submit its status report on the investigation into the 2G scam to the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).
21 2G licences of Videocon, 22 of Uninor, 21 of Loop, 21 of Sistema, 13 of Swan, 9 of Idea, 6 of S-tel, 3 of of Tata, were cancelled by the Supreme Court. A fine of Rs 5 crore each has been imposed on Uninor, Swan Telecom and Tata Telecom. A penalty of Rs 50 lakh has also been imposed on Loop, S-Tel, Allianz and Sistema Shyam.
The current licenses will remain in place for another four months and by this time the government should decide fresh rules for 2G auction.
