1993 blast accused files curative petition ahead of execution

Yakub Memon, the sole surviving convict of the 1993 Mumbai Serial blasts has moved to the Supreme Court on a hope to get relief from his execution which is just weeks away. Late in April, the Supreme Court had dismissed the review petition filed by Memon and his lawyers against the mercy plea that was rejected earlier in April, this year.

The execution date was fixed by a special Tada court judge of Mumbai for 30th July, 2015 and the Maharashtra government led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had asserted that they will soon be finalizing the place of execution for the accused.

Memon and his lawyer, in a glimmer of hope, have filed a curative petition before the Supreme Court of India to ensure there is no miscarriage of justice.

The plea is expected to come up for hearing in the next week.

The Home Department sources told TOI that the orders of the Tada Court have been forwarded to Nagpur Central Jail, where Memon is jailed. Also, a 14-day notice – which are generally served for allowing the convict time to write to his family about his last wish and will – has been forwarded to the Superintendent of the jail.

Brother of Tiger Memon, Yakub Memon is an accused of 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts. 257 people were killed and more than 700 were injured in this first coordinated terror attack wherein RDX was used and several scooters fit with bombs were placed at several locations in the city.
