At least 13 people including a civilian, nine soldiers and three policemen were killed in a series of terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir yesterday. The incident took place just two days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the valley before the election on Tuesday.
Government condemned the attack and said terrorists wanted to disrupt the state Assembly polls where record number of people have turned in to cast their votes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack as saying “desperate attempts to derail the atmosphere of hope and goodwill as seen by increased voter turnout.”
Minister of State PMO Jitendra Singh said, “Terrorists want to disrupt polls. There has been an increase in infiltration bids by terrorists. I don’t see any fall in polling percentage.”
In Uri where a suicide attack took place on Friday morning in which nine soldiers and six terrorists were killed, food packets and other items have been found with Pakistani stamps.
“The food packets, which were recovered from the encounter site, are generally used by Pakistan Army,” a senior Army officer told reporters.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh warned Pakistan and asked to stop such incidents.
“I think Pakistan should try to stop these incidents, if they can’t they should speak to India about it,” said Rajnath Singh.
Two people were also killed in grenade attacks in Tral and Shopian in South Kashmir where voting to take place on Tuesday.
