The US jury on Thursday asked Samsung Electronics to pay Apple $290 million for copying vital iPhone and iPad features in a damages retrial.
Last year Apple won the historic patent battle against Samsung Electronics, where court found The verdict Samsung infringed Apple patents while making its devices.
The decision came after a week-long trial in a San Jose, California federal court where Apple seek $379.8 million and Samsung argued that it would pay $52.7 million. Samsung is set to appeal against this verdict.
At first Apple was awarded with $1.05 billion in its original trial, But US District Judge Lucy Koh rejected the penalty and discarded $450 million of the damages by saying the previous jury miscalculated the amount Samsung owed. He ordered the new trial.
In the on-going bitter battle between the world’s two largest smartphone makers – Apple and Samsung -are not ready to leave a single inch. While Apple accused Samsung of copying its vital iPhone features in their Android-based phones, Samsung argued that Apple patents are invalid and Apple has copied Samsung’s technology.
Samsung lawyer William Price told jury, “Apple doesn’t own beautiful and sexy”.
Apple attorney William Lee has lodged counter attack and told the jury that, Samsung used Apple’s technology and “apple can never get back to where it should have been in 2010.”
A third trial is slated for March next year where Apple alleged Samsung of using Apple’s technology in its latest devices.
