TMC demands resignation of WB HRC chief AK Ganguly

The Trinamool Congress demands resignation of former Supreme Court judge AK Ganguly from the post of the Chief of Human Rights Commission of West Bengal over the alleged sexual harassment charges. A law intern has made allegations against AK Ganguly for sexuall harassing her last year.

“AK Ganguly and a few other former Bengali judges of the Supreme Court have put us in shame. He must immediately resign from the West Bengal Human Rights Commission chairman post on moral grounds,” Trinamool Congress MP and senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee said.

“The apex court constituted the special inquiry committee only because he is a former judge. Had it been any other person, an FIR would have been lodged and the person would have been arrested,” Banerjee added.

The BJP also asked judge AK Ganguly’s step down from the post.
“I strongly feel that Justice AK Ganguly should resign as Chairman of WB Human Rights Commission,” BJP leader Sushma Swaraj tweeted.

“Justice Ganguly should immediately step down. Until the investigation is concluded, he must not be allowed to hold office,” said NCP leader Tariq Anwar.

However, the support for Judge AK Ganguly came from another BJP leader. Subramaniam Swamy said that there is no need for Justice Ganguly to resign.

“Anyone can make allegations. Why should Justice Ganguly resign? There is no FIR. The law intern has only made allegations. Justice Ganguly shouldn’t resign on the basis of allegations,” Swamy said.

Retired Attorney General of India Soli Sorabjee also said AK Ganguly should not resign from his post.

In an interview with CNN-IBN, Justice Ganguly had denied the allegations and said he was shattered and shocked.
