The Supreme Court on Monday said that Aadhar cards or the Unique Identification cannot be the mandatory proof for enjoying government’s various schemes.
While addressing a Public Interest Petition on examining the legal sanctity of Aadhar, the Supreme Court asked government to not make Aadhar a mandatory to get the benefit of government schemes.
This is a huge setback for UPA government’s dream project, Aadhar, headed by the Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani.
The PIL was lodged by KS Puttaswamy, retired judge of the Karnataka High Court, accusing government of bypassing Parliament by going ahead with the distribution of UID numbers and cards to all residents without statutory power.
