Quake of 5.1 mag hits Andaman Islands, no damages yet

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Ritcher scale hit the islands of Andaman and Nicobar on Friday at 2:30 pm. No reports of damage has been made. The experts have said that there is no tsunami warning. This small chain of islands lie hundreds and hundreds of miles away from the eastern India in the Indian Ocean.

“Earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale has hit Andaman region at 2.29pm,” an IMD official said.

The epicentre of the earthquake is reported to be 135km south-west of Port Blair and the depth was measured as 10 km.

Earlier, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Papua New Guinea, 110 kms south-southwest of the town of Kokopo just after a 6.7 magnitude tremor in the same region.

The Andaman-Nicobar quake comes within a week of the earthquake that hit Nepal and India last Saturday.
