The Odisha Police has arrested the director of a Visakhapatnam based hospital in connection of a kidney racket.
The Seven Hills Hospital director Dr N Prabhakar Babu was arrested following an allegation against his hospital to carry out illegal kidney transplant. A complaint was filed against the hospital for carrying out a kidney transplant in which a woman sold her kidney to an unrelated Bhubaneshwar man for Rs 10 lakh.
The Odisha police has lodged case against Babu under Sections 18, 32 and 120 (transplantation of human organs and tissues) of the IPC. Babu was taken to hospital as the police came to take him to custody. He claimed to fall sick.
The Seven Hills Hospital denied any allegations and said there was no unethical practice while transplanting the kidney. The management told reporters that a kidney was transplanted to patient Mohan Lenka and the donor was his wife.
“We believed that Mohan Lenka’s documents were genuine and proceeded with the kidney transplant. Lenka underwent a kidney transplant on April 4 this year and he was discharged on April 10 from the Seven Hills Hospital,” the hospital management said.
“We are not equipped to establish the veracity of these documents. The Odisha police said that these documents were forged and the director was accused of forgery. Despite working to the best of our abilities, we are being accused of having bad intentions,” the management added.
