The 67 suspended Kashmiri students, who have been facing suspension and sedition charges for cheering the Pakistani cricket team against India in a recently concluded Asia cup match, are set to return to their University in Uttar Pradesh.
The Swami Vivekanand Subharti University in Meerut suspended the students and asked them to leave the campus after the vice chancellor called their cheering behaviour after Pakistan beat India was “unacceptable”. Later UP police accused the students of disturbing communal harmony and were threatened them with sedition charges.
After J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah protested and spoke to UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, the charges were dropped.
“In absence of any evidence to support the charges of sedition… we shall not probe the complaint in this light,” Meerut police chief Omkar Singh had said.
