Finally succumbed to pressure, former Supreme Court judge A K Ganguly has resigned on Monday evening as the chairman of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC).
According to TV reports Justice Ganguly who has been facing sexual harassment charges leveled by law intern, has handed over his resignation to the West Bengal governor.
“He has done the right thing. His resignation should have come earlier. I’m happy that the dignity of the Human Rights Commission office is maintained,” Additional Solicitor General Indira Kaising told CNN-IBN.
In her blog, a law intern has accused Justice Ganguly of harassing her sexually in December 2012 in Delhi. Justice Ganguly denied the charges, but pressure was mounting on him as soon as the three-judge Supreme Court panel had indicted Justice Ganguly. West Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written two mails to President Pranab Mukherjee seeking his immediate removal.
Earlier in the day former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee had said Justice Ganguly decided to step down.
“Justice Ganguly spoke to me over telephone and said that he is thinking of resigning (as WBHRC chief),” Soli Sorabjee had said.
