FIR lodged against Sociologist Ashis Nandy

Controversy continues to  haunt Jaipur Literature Festival!

An FIR has been lodged against Sociologist Ashis Nandy for his comment on corruption by Dalits and backward Classes.

On Saturday, during a panel discussion, Mr. Nandy said, “Most corrupt people (in India) come from Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.”

His comment was received with sharp criticism and strong reaction both inside and outside the festival arena.

Political class did not waste time and lashed out against him for his remarks. BJP and Congress strongly criticize him and said it was unfortunate and uncalled for. Left parties asked for proper action in this matter. BSP leader Mayawati demanded Mr Nandy’s immediate arrest.

Although Mr Nandy issued a clarification later by saying that all he wanted to say was that corruption by Dalits was noticed more than other classes in India and he apologized if he hurt anyone’s sentiment.

But the damage had already been done! A police case was registered against Mr Nandy under the SC/ST Act which has a provision of maximum 10 years imprisonment.
