The bravery of Rohtak sisters will be honoured on Republic Day

Soon after the incident gone viral and praised poured over them for their bravery, the Haryana government announced that it will give cash awards to the sisters on Republic Day function.

The three men who allegedly molested the two sisters and abused a pregnant woman on a Haryana Roadways bus were sent to judicial custody till December 6.

The incident took place on November 24, when two sisters Arti Kumar (22) and Pooja Kumar (19) were harassed by three accused in a Haryana Roadways bus going from Rohtak to Sonipat. The incident was filmed by a pregnant lady travelling on the same bus and was the only one who protested. Remaining passengers were seen seating and smirking.

What made the incident all the more alarming is the fact that none of the co-passengers who are seen in the video, cringing and smirking, so much as raised a finger to come to the aid of the hapless sisters. In fact the co-passengers are seen in the video dissuading the girls from lodging a police complaint. The pregnant woman was the only one who objected to the harassment by the three men. After the two sisters fought back and tried to beat the molesters, they were thrown off the moving bus for which they suffered minor injuries. The pregnant lady got off the bus soon and accompanied the girls to the nearest police station to lodge FIR. On Sunday, the police arrested all three accused.

“All the girls should do what these sisters did. They did well. But it is sad that none of the other passengers came to their help. The society has to change its mindset and people should stop being mere onlookers when such incidents take place,” Union Minister Uma Bharti said.
