In a path-breaking treatment, a HIV infectious child from Mississippi has been cured using standard HIV drugs.
US researchers confirmed on Sunday and hopeful that this ground-breaking case could offer insights on how to eliminate HIV infection in children which leads to AIDS.
“This is a proof of concept that HIV can be potentially curable in infants,” said Dr Deborah Persaud, a virologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
A baby girl, who was born with HIV, was treated under Dr Hannah Gay, a pediatric HIV specialist. Dr Gay put the infant on a cocktail of three HIV-fighting drugs – zidovudine (AZT), lamivudine, and nevirapine. And now she is completely free from HIV virus.
More research will be conducted in coming days on this particular treatment.
